Meditation is the process of turning inward, calming the mind, and practicing presence.”
The mental and physical benefits of meditation are widely recognized. Not only for adults, but children too. Teaching kids to look after their minds is just as important as teaching them how to care for their bodies. Meditation can help them calm their minds & manage undesired emotions in a therapeutic manner.
A consistent practice of meditation can help children with the following:
- Kids feel calmer and can control their emotions better
- Kids have an increased emotional capacity to deal with stressful events such as exams or personal problems
- Behaviour is improved
- Lower levels of depression and anxiety
- School attendance improves
- Improved memory
Meditation can be made a part of bedtime or morning routine for kids.
Here are a few tips to get your kids to get started!
- Have them sit in a comfortable position. You can try a yoga pose like baby cobra or have them sit cross-legged.
- Teach them about connecting with their bodies. For example, tell them to watch their belly move up and down as they take a deep breath in and out.
- Reinforce the why. Take these moments to emphasize the benefits we feel when practicing meditation.
“It’s important through all of this to remember that kids can meditate and still be kids,” Make it fun. “Sure, they may wiggle around or laugh the first few times, but this is when practice and patience are key.”
